Raising Awareness

Raising Awareness

Keep a Child Alive (KCA) is a charity dedicated to stopping the awful carnage that AIDS is inflicting on families, and specifically children, where in Africa alone it has created 13 million orphans over the past few years. Raining awareness is a crucial part of any charity’s activities, and Paul Taylor from Rise Films was hired to produce a behind the scenes video of a recent photoshoot done by renowned photographer Rankin of African Premiership footballers to highlight KCA’s work.

He used a Sony EX3 camera kit hired from VMI, along with a Sachtler tripod, on-board mic and “a bunch of memory cards,” for the project. “I was keen to try out the kit because I’d heard good feedback about it and wanted a chance to see how comfortable I felt using the camera,” he says.

The results underline just why the EX3 is proving such a popular camcorder choice for many professionals.

“I was really pleased with the usability of the camera,” he says. “I have previously always been put off using smaller cameras like the Z1/PD150 etc because the resolution in the colour screen has never been good enough for me to focus with. I’ve always had real difficulty focusing on them so up until now have always used a Sony DSR 570 with the black and white viewfinder. However the EX3 was brilliant, the resolution in the screen and with features like being able to tweak Peaking on the viewfinder made focusing much easier, and much more like using a larger camera.

“The other thing that used to annoy me so much about Z1/PD150 was that the focus & zoom rings were not mechanical but used to turn to infinity, which made it tough for me to get used to. But the EX3 obviously doesn’t have this problem – it has a fixed ring. So I think I’ve finally found a smaller camera that I can use!”
