ARRI Alexa Plus XT 4:3
Please read VMI’s comparison article: ARRI Alexa, all you need to know about the Alexa range of cameras
RRI Alexa Plus XT 35mm Digital Film Camera recording to ARRIRAW on internal SSD system. Similar to regular Alexa 4:3 but features a 4:3 Super 35 sensor and the ability to switch from 16:9 sensor mode to 4:3 sensor mode and internal ARRIRAW capture.
The standard camera package includes 120fps High-Speed Option, Alexa Plus option (easy integration to ARRI WLCS lens control system), anamorphic de-squeeze, AARIRAW capture with SSD capture and 4 x 512GB SSDs.
Note that unless you are capturing ARRIRAW, then there is no advantage to shooting on the Alexa XT compared with ARRI Alexa PLUS 4:3
The ARRI XT/XR represents a development of the ARRI Alexa 35mm digital motion picture camera system, which now captures both Prores 2K, HD 4:2:2 and HD 4:4:4 and now also ARRIRAW for HD, 2K or 4K deliverables onto reliable 512GB SSDs.
Shoots Apple Prores 4:2:2 or 4:4:4
This is a stunning high-end camera shooting to low-cost SxS Express Cards in a reliable format using native Apple FCP Prores 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 format which can be easily ingested and edited.
Our opinion on the ARRI Alexa is that with the Alexa's pro-focused build and simple post production workflow, that if the workflow is reliable enough to mean that you don't need to pay a DIT to be on location, then it shouldn't cost any more than using a RED and really go mainstream!
A Super 35 CMOS Bayer sensor can shoot uncompressed 2K resolutions output in native Prores 4:2:2 onto internal SxS card flash memory.
You can shoot high end 1080p video with the camera and have it encoded in Final Cut Pro native codecs (Apple's ProRes 4:2:2 and ProRes 4:4:4) to allow editing as you shoot without conversion - a rarity in the cinematic HD world or you can record off-board to many off-board recorders such as Gemini RAW 4:4:4 to record full uncompressed 4:4:4 HD
ALEXA XT Plus 4:3 for anamorphic
Shooting with anamorphic lenses for 2.39:1 widescreen distribution, a process often referred to as CinemaScope (trademark 20th Century Fox), results in unique images that have long been appreciated by cinematographers, directors and the viewing public alike. The fundamentals of the process apply to digital acquisition in exactly the same way as they always have done to film, so long as one has a sensor that is the size and shape of a film frame, and a viewfinder that can de-squeeze the compressed image. The ALEXA system ticks both of these boxes.
Anamorphic lenses squeeze the image by a factor of two, thus projecting a 1.195:1 aspect ratio image onto the sensor. When using sensors that are natively 16:9 or even wider, it is necessary to crop the sides, resulting in a much smaller used sensor area and a different angle of view for the lens.
With the ALEXA 4:3 cameras, the full area of the sensor is used and a much higher image quality retained. In addition, the unique optical characteristics of anamorphic lenses the magic at the heart of anamorphic cinematography are rendered faithfully and fully in the digital image.
