Convergent Odyssey 4K Recorder

The Convergent 4:4:4 HD Recorder is supplied by VMI with either 4K Canon C500 option or 4K Sony Option.

This unit is equipped with 4K Sony option as well as a multitude of HD recording formats (including Prores 422) plus playback and excellent 7.7" OLED monitor with comprehensive monitoring tools. It weighs just 550g in a milled aluminum case and measures just 200 x 155 x 25 mm (7.9" x 6.1" x 1.0").

New Firmware v2017.07 brings Varicam RAW up to 2K/240fps, AVID DNxHD to 2080p50/60 and Titan Extract

The ultimate addition to the Odyssey RAW Bundle for VariCam LT users is here! Our team has worked closely with Panasonic to enable RAW recording at up to 2K/240fps (as well as 4K/60fps) from the amazing Panasonic VariCam LT on the Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+.

Through this update, both Apollo and Odyssey get Avid DNxHD support at both 145 and 220 Mbps data-rates for common HD formats (1080i50/60, 720p50/60, and 1080p25/30) as well as 1080p50/60 video. The compressed video files are recorded in a QuickTime wrapper (.mov extension). Odyssey7Q/7Q+ can record a single stream of DNxHD, while the Apollo (or Odyssey w/ Apollo Option) can record up to 4 independent streams simultaneously.

The addition of DNxHD in particular makes the Apollo a very attractive solution for multi-cam ENG and news magazine shoots. In addition, a new transfer tool (Convergent Design Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD Transfer Tool 3.0” or “CD Transfer 3.0” for short) is now available, that supports both Apple ProRes, or Avid DNxHD recordings, (Note that DNxHD users must use the new version of the transfer tool.)

The Titan HD Extract (FREE UPGRADE) for Odyssey & Apollo uses one 4K camera to create three HD video signals. One frame is a Supersample of the full image area and two are windows selected from within the original input. These windows can be panned smoothly through the 4K field and the three angles can be Live-Switched. All four HD signals can be recorded simultaneously in Apple ProRes with matching timecode and filenames.

Sony FS-700 4K option now as standard

The Odyssey 7Q has many different recording options available at additional cost including ARRIRAW, Canon C500 and multistream HD.  This version is supplied with HD-SDI 1920x1080 and also Sony 4K option as standard.  The Sony option is compatible with Sony FS-700 (equipped with 4K option).  See details on new 7Q firmware release 1.105 for 4K functionality

Available Frame rates and sizes from Sony FS-700:

4K Sony YCC 10-Bit Compressed up to 60fps
2K Raw 12-Bit up to 240fps (CinemaDNG)
HD YCC 422 10-Bit Compressed up to 60fps (super sample from 4K raw)
HD RGB 444 12-Bit Compressed up to 60fps (super sample from 4K raw)

3D LUT FILES FROM CONVERGENT DESIGN (SLOG-2 / REC709)

FS700 RAW files are Linear, thus the files need a Gamma 2.2 correction in order to look correct. You may notice when you first import your files that they appear very dark before correction

SSD Drive Storage

Compact Flash is a great choice for most compressed recorders, but it simply lacks the required performance for uncompressed video. Compact Flash tops out at about 90 Mbytes/sec, while uncompressed video ranges from 100 to over 300 Mbytes/sec; so clearly, it’s impossible to record uncompressed video onto a single CF card. Additionally, CF card capacity maxes out at 128GB, while SSDs are now available up to 512GB.

VMI offers the 256GB (1.8") as a good universal storage size.

As standard, the 4K on board recorders are being supplied with 3 x 256GB storage

256GB SSD storage → 32 minutes @ 1080p24 4:2:2, 10-bit

Thus, you have sufficient storage of 90 minutes of 1080p with 3 x drives and more storage is available at an additional charge :
