Your Compact Solution for High-Speed Filming

Traditional super slow-motion cameras have long been vital tools for high-end commercial, natural history, and narrative productions. However, they have historically come with significant operational trade-offs: massive physical footprints, heavy power consumption, complex RAM-buffering workflows, and long offload times on set.

The Freefly Ember S5K changes that equation completely. Designed by Freefly Systems, the Ember takes high-speed filmmaking out of the realm of specialised studio setups and integrates it directly into a standard production workflow.

For years, operators using high-speed cameras had to rely on internal RAM buffers. You would trigger the camera, hold your breath, save a brief clip to an internal buffer, and then wait minutes to dump that single file to a dedicated magazine before shooting again. Miss the action by half a second, and the shot was lost.

Freefly approached high-speed capture with an entirely different philosophy. Instead of relying on temporary RAM, the Ember records continuously directly to an internal fast NVMe solid-state drive. You simply press record and shoot just like a conventional cinema camera.

Measuring a compact 100 mm cube and weighing approximately 800 grams, the Ember S5K is light enough to mount on drones, vehicle rigs, gimbal systems, or small robotic arms without requiring heavy-duty support equipment. It bridges the gap between ultra-high-frame-rate capture and mobile production agility.

Continuous ProRes Recording

The headline capability of the Ember S5K is its continuous recording functionality. Recording directly in 10-bit Apple ProRes, the camera eliminates clip duration restrictions. You can let the camera run through an entire action sequence or tabletop liquid pour without worrying about missing the exact trigger moment.

Global Shutter Sensor

Built around a Super35 Gpixel sensor, the Ember uses a true global electronic shutter. This eliminates rolling shutter artifacts, motion skew, and jello effects when panning rapidly or capturing fast-moving subjects such as rotors, vehicle wheels, or rapid industrial machinery.

App-Based Control and Stabilisation

Freefly designed an ecosystem for mobile control via iOS, iPadOS, and macOS apps. Through Wi-Fi or wired connections, operators can adjust settings, trigger recording, preview shots in real time, and review playback seconds after a take. The internal IMU logs motion data, allowing automated image stabilisation directly within the macOS app prior to offloading.

Modular Mounting and Adaptability

The Ember comes fitted with a positive-locking E-mount as standard, which can be easily adapted to PL or EF lens mounts. Its lightweight cube body features numerous M3 and 1/4-inch mounting points, making it straight forward to integrate into custom camera rigs, crash housings, or tight studio spaces.

Practical Applications

  • Ideal for high-speed liquid splashes, food preparation shots, and product reveals where precise timing and razor-sharp clarity are required.
  • Due to its low weight (800g), the camera mounts onto small heavy-lift drones without compromising flight time or maneuverability.
  • The global shutter prevents distortion when capturing high-speed action from moving vehicles or tracking arms.
  • Continuous recording means operators can leave the camera running during unpredictable animal movements without filling a buffer or missing critical actions.

The Freefly Ember S5K provides a versatile, fast, and practical solution for cinematographers looking to incorporate high-frame-rate visual storytelling into their shoots without the traditional technical bottlenecks.
