As part of the final of the festival, eight finalists were given the same script to create their own version of a film titled “The Interview.” The film follows a woman who turns up for a job interview, only to find out the interview is not about a role, but rather determines whether she should pass over to the afterlife or return to Earth. Sonny Poon Tip and his team only had 7 days to shoot, edit and deliver the film, an incredible turnaround for an award-winning short. VMI assisted the production with top-of-the-line equipment, ensuring there was no compromise in quality despite this tight window: “VMI’s contribution to this short film was integral! As an early career filmmaker, to have the support of such an amazing company is next to none. The creation of the film would quite literally not have been possible without the equipment donation from VMI. To work with the best quality equipment to bring a vision to life is truly special and we are very grateful.” – Sonny Poon Tip The film captivated the judges with its creative and intentional use of set, lighting and sound. The soft, warm look generates a dreamy and inviting, but simultaneously otherworldly environment. Poon Tip stated that he “chose to set mine in a lampshade shop using the lights to convey an otherworldly atmosphere.” The film’s fantastic appearance was achieved with the combined use of our Canon C500, Canon Sumire Primes, and a Zeiss 70-200 CZ. The atmosphere was contrasted by the busy, but intentional set design. The viewer can feel somewhat claustrophobic but not quite anxious, imitating the unease and unfamiliarity Mara, the woman, might feel. With cunning use of framing, objects within the environment are utilised in pulling focus towards Mara, and contribute to the mystery of the unnamed interviewer by obstructing his face and presence, making him more visible as the short continues. This success is off the back of another win by Sonny Poon Tip, where his standout film ‘Morning, Glory‘ was also named a winner. The next step for the crew of The Interview? Sonny now has 12 months to develop a feature-length script, and then produce with a minimum $250,000 budget. VMI is eager to see what’s next for Sonny Poon Tip and his crew. Find out more
