A first time with 4K

A first time with 4K

For a newcomer to break into the international or even British film scene calls for a bold approach. But it needs much more: creativity, technical excellence and business nous.

“This is a challenging industry, particularly when you’re working against the clock and to a strict budget. And some of the suppliers we worked with on our latest project, especially VMI, really stood out as true partners, that wanted us to succeed", remarks film maker and director Adam Rolston.

Rolston’s 75-minute feature that he is hoping will be viewed at forthcoming international film festivals was shot on location in London. Meet me on the Southbank has high production values and is fast paced.

External scenes were shot at all times of the day, using London's Southbank and the Thames as a backdrop. Indoor low-light sets – an essential for a romantic comedy - were a marked contrast to the bright outdoor settings. To capture all the action faithfully and with rich colour reproduction, the DOP, Jamie Burr, selected the RED One M-X, recording onto RED SSD modules.

“The camera system has a great workflow, fantastic stability and delivers beautiful 4K results. The colour grader loved working with the files, the DIT (Julia Fecchio) was able to manage the media with ease and the daillies looked excellent on my laptop screen.” Notes Rolston.

The RED particularly proved itself during a 2-minute take of a dance sequence. Mounted on a steadicam device, the camera shot the scene without a glitch, assisted by the performance of the Cooke Mini S4i primes and the lighting skills of the gaffer, David Beaumont. With editing at TV Set complete and grading finished, the director is in no doubt about the benefits of shooting RED and filming at resolutions above 1080:

“The colour depth and image definition are outstanding; they give the post production team huge flexibility. The finished 2K pictures are incredible and belie the small size of our crew and the short production time. From finding investors via Venture Giant to working in 4K for the first time, it’s been a great learning experience, creatively, technically and commercially. For my next project, I’m keen to stick with RED and I’m interested to see the 5K performance of the Epic.“ The director comments enthusiastically.

He wraps up by saying that for the production, “I needed all the support and advice I could get. VMI provided not just a great camera package for our feature film, but were helpful, friendly, and supportive every step of the way. They’re a highly professional and efficient outfit that I would highly recommend to any film-maker. I will certainly be returning to VMI on future productions."
