Summary

Panasonic LUMIX GH5 4K camera with MFT(Micro 4/3) size sensor. This camera is suitable for both stills and video applications and the GH5 includes 10 bit, 4K, 4:2:2 onboard record capability in MFT format recording internally to SD cards at up to 30fps.  Note however that the Speedbooster adapters supplied will allow Canon EF mount lenses and effectively increase the sensor size and aspect ratio to APSC/S-35 format.

However this camera can mount directly to Micro 4/3 lenses without using any adapter.

The 10 bit 4:2:2 onboard record capability at 30 fps is important, as this is presently the only DSLR capable of this, though with an appropriate off board recorder, you can increase this to 60p.

Solidly built, capable of 6K stills images and exceptional 4K video quality using the MOV format, the addition of the Speedbooster means that all Canon EF lenses are compatible and the light format and form factor makes this camera ideally suited to Gimbal and lightweight productions.

This camera is ideal for video beast but is also excellently suited for stills, as it features advanced image stabilisation and MF assist functions too.

Other welcome additions include dual card slots, a joystick to help quickly navigate menus and a bigger brighter wider EVF.

The GH5 comes programmed with V-log, and LUT data can now be loaded directly to the camera with an SD card (not supplied).

The APSC image size is important if you are thinking about using PL lenses.  In such an instance, there will be a significant crop without using an appropriate image optic and the speedbooster achieves this for EF.

Note that this camera has a 4:3 aspect ratio sensor, so appropriate anamorphic lenses may allow a 2:1 image capture with appropriate software in the future.

Audio

DSLR cameras all suffer from a lack of audio inputs and the GH5 is no exception.  However the VMI GH5 package includes the external audio box with dual XLR inputs as standard and this attaches to the hotshoe for convenience, as it is both powered (phantom power capability) and does not interfere when changing cards or batteries.

An optional K6/ME66 Gun Mic and Headphone package is available at £12 per day including boom pole & cables in a single case.

Lens Mount

This camera has a native MFT stills lens mount and the speedbooster adapter supplied as standard allows various EF autofocus zoom and prime lenses and these also allow electronic control of the lenses too.  Note that with an appropriate adapter also available, the Zeiss Distagon DSLR Prime lenses. VMI supply the Zeiss Distagon DSLR lenses with a manual iris ring are also compatible.

Please note: Firmware version 2.0 now supports MP4/MOV 4K 422 10bit ALL-I. The 64GB SDXC cards provided with this camera do not support this recording quality. The compatible 128GB Panasonic SDXC cards can be hire from our sister company VMEDIA

NOTE – When using an SDHC memory card: You can continue recording without interruption even if the file size exceeds 4 GB, but the motion picture file will be divided and recorded/played back separately.
NOTE – When using an SDXC memory card: You can continue recording without interruption even if the file size exceeds 96 GB or 3 hours 4 minutes in length, but the motion picture file will be divided and recorded/played back separately.

NOTE *3 For [4K 60p] video output, use an HDMI2.0 cable that has the HDMI logo on it, and that is described as”4K compatible”.

NOTE *5 The camera may stop recording when used in lower or higher than recommended operating temperature: -10 to 40 degrees.
NOTE ・4:2:2 10-bit recording is a recording mode for film production and the video needs to be processed on PC. The original video cannot be played on standard TV, Blu-ray Disc™ recorder and Blu-ray Disc™ player. It may cause problems such as freezing when played on these devices.
