MikroMak Macro Workshop (pm)

February 4 2025 @ 1:00 pm 5:00 pm

A well-kept secret is that a little known group of macro lenses exist called ‘Nelsonian’ lenses, which were invented by Jay Margolis and include both the world-renowned TS-160 InfiniProbe and also the MikroMak lenses, which aren’t like any other lenses that you are likely to have seen before, as they are based upon Telescope and Microscope principals.

This is a workshop to learn about why they are different to other macros and probes, what applications are they particularly suited and also, most importantly, how best to use them.

During COVID, I took it upon myself to learn about them and write this comprehensive article about what they can do and how to use them and actually won the annual ‘Nelsonian’ award for this study.

This will be held at VMI with a number of cameras but as this is quite a small space, we are limiting each session to just 15 spaces.

Clip taken with MikroMak Primes, shot with Chronos 2.1 (which it has to be said doesn’t perform well in shadow detail without a lot of light) at 25fps for the cymatics and 1000fps for everything else. Duncan Telford, DP.

Here are some of the lenses which we are planning to have on show. Others may also be included and these are subject to change, depending on availability.

Infinity Photo-Optical InfiniProbe TS-160 Robusto Probe/Specialist Lens (Infiniprobe) PL/EF Mount

Top of the range Nelsonian lens set capable of unparalled quality for extreme macro cinematography. This system also has the capability of focussing from infinity to only millimeters from an object. Supplied with PL & EF mounts and includes a variety of lenses for maximum versatility and covers S-35 and FF too.

Infinity Photo-Optical Nelsonian MikroMak Probe 8-Lens Prime Kit PL Mount

Like the TS-160 system, the Mikromak works on Nelsonian designs based on Microscope principles, in order to achieve extraordinary clarity and quality. Both EF and PL mount options are included in the kit as standard.

These eight Full-Frame primes are designed to generate deep focus, forced perspective and up to 6x macro images. Extreme depth of field means that pulling focus is often unnecessary.  These are provided in PL mount and produce world-class images comparable to the best zoom microscopes and cover Full-Frame/Super 35mm.

The MikroMak lenses fully cover S-35 and FF too.

MikroMak Nelsonian Prime Set

Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens (EF & PL Mount)

24mm probe lens with PL mount which shoots excellent macro images but with a large depth of field.  The USB-powered light on the end of the lens makes lighting easy too.

Unlike the Nelsonian lenses, images are captured the correct way up.

Laowa Probe PL Mount

Laowa Probe EF mount

laowa_24mm_1
Laowa Pro2be 24mm 3 x Lens Kit (PL Mount)

A faster probe lens design than the existing Laowa Probe and Periprobes and supplied in this package with a 3-lens kit including 0°, 35° & 90° modules offering specific perspectives for more creative freedom.  With a maximum T8 aperture, 2X magnification, and a waterproof distance of 36.6cm, this can be used for a multitude of applications, including for shots below the water.

See you there!
