MAG Superheroes 2019 Page -Riding to make the world free of landmines

We are are well on the way to raising £25,000 for MAG International to help make the world landmine-free by 2025 by riding from London to Bristol and London to Amsterdam in 2019 for the 3rd year in a row.

We embarked upon these rides when I learned that 24 people are blown up by landmines daily and half of them are children and we want to assist in MAG’s aim to try to make the world landmine free by 2025, as this is cruel and capricious and blameless children deserve better to be able to walk without fear.

The great news is that MAG clear landmines and make peoples' lives better.  They have helped 1.4m people to avoid being blown up by landmines, cleared 100,000 pieces of ordinance in the last year and as a result, the toll on innocent human beings being blown up has reduced from 24 to 20 over the past year.  It still means that around 10 children are blown up daily, so our quest is still important.

We will ride from London to Bristol on 31 Aug-1st Sep 2019 and London to Amsterdam on 10-12 September 2019.

Corporate Sponsor Heroes pledging at least £200

We embarked on this plan to raise money and all of the following companies have dug deep and all supported are pledging to support our in 2019 for at least £200.  All sponsors committing to sponsorship by the 1st August 2019 will have their logos included on the 2019 design of our jerseys.

Why did we start this?

We started this campaign because I learned that every day 24 people were maimed/killed by landmines DAILY.  In the first year of the ride in 2017, we raised £12,500 and last year managed to raise more than £22,000, which was incredible.

It's true - every day 24 people had their lives changed forever and the tragedy is that mostly this affects children, who are just playing.

It is a cruel, capricious act of deliberately maiming/hurting/killing people and in Iraq, it is  becoming worse, with remote controls and fridge doors acting as booby traps in peoples' own homes when they return.

This is a charity whose aims are close to my heart and we aim to completing 2 events this year to raise money for this very worthy cause.

History of the events and motivation

Some years ago I read a book called “One Step Beyond” by Chris Moon and it really changed my life.

It was about a marathon runner called Chris Moon who had an interesting life before being blown up by a land mine and losing an arm and a leg.  After he recovered, he continued to run marathons including the fabled “Marathon des Sables” which crosses the Sahara Desert and is accurately described as the toughest footrace on earth.

I was really inspired by his story and grit and also by the horror and inequity of the tragedy that landmines have on so many children who are entirely innocent of the conflicts which they are involved in, that I decided to collect for a mine clearing organisation called MAG.  They work tirelessly all around the world to help the 60 million or so people in conflict zones living in fear of landmines with the solid intention of making the world landmine free by 2020.

Thank you for reading my story, now please help these victims, whose lives were irrevocably changed in an instant.

2019 MAG Superhero Challenge

Ride 1: 31 Aug-1Sep 2019. London-Bristol.  131 miles (209km)

Note that the date has changed from late July.

This is  a superb ride from Central London to Bristol across quiet countryroads and some tow paths across beautiful countryside over a summer weekend.

The last two years have seen this fall over a hot weekend and we aim to increase the riders from 5 to 8.

The first day of 103km (64 miles), we ended at a campsite near Newbury and enjoyed an relaxing evening of barbeque and beers courtesy of Jay and Chau in the support team.  This is a camping place which also supported our ride with subsidised pitch (Oakley Farm Caravan Park), where we camped overnight .  The next morning, we completed the lightly longer leg of 120km (75 miles) and upon arrival in Bristol, as per usual, Jon and Sarah from VMI Bristol put on a most excellent celebratory arriving party complete with BBQ, beers, bunting and formula 1 flags.

Special thanks to Chau, Ali and Jay for support assistance, driving the van and keeping us well plied with refreshments, for Ellie for the sponsors' support and also to Oakley Farm Caravan Park for the subsidised camping pitches..

We burnt over 7,500 calories and suffered no mechanicals and most had sore bums and legs, a healthy sun tan and big smiles.  Altogether, this was a really great event and we are already planning to do it again next year.

Ride 2: 10-12 Sep 2019. London-Amsterdam.  154 miles (248km)

This is to be a challenging ride from London to Amsterdam over 2 days 10-12 September scheduled to arrive in time for the IBC international TV symposium in Amsterdam.

Here is what it was like last year...

The weather was great on day one and we made stunning progress.

We caught the overnight ferry and then rode through heavy rain on the second day to arrive in Amsterdam.

No mechanical problems and a small amount of road rash and celebratory Rijstafel at our favourite Amsterdam Indonesian Restaurant, Cafe Bojo.

Unlike last year, we plan to ride in 2 groups of 4 riders, with a fast group and intermediate group to suit most fitness levels.
