Compact S-35 cinema camera with slightly improved 6K KOMODO-X sensor over the conventional Komodo with double the original slow motion rates (up to 120p in 4K) and still features RED’s cinema-grade image quality, colour science, and sensor technology.  This has a surprisingly small footprint and high specification and is supplied with VMI package, which includes touch-screen 7″ LCD, bridge plate, handle and various viewfinder options too.

KOMODO is native Canon RF (now a locking RF mount), which is easily adaptable to Canon EF or PL.

Difference between RED Komodo-X and Komodo-6K

RED produced the RED Komodo and then improved some of the functionality and specifications to make the Komodo-X.  All of these improvements are subtle but there are some important differences:

  • RED Komodo and Komodo X are both S-35 with 6K capture.
  • The new Komodo-X is significantly more expensive, which reflects the differing rental cost too.
  • Komodo could only capture  6K @40fps and 4K @ 60fps, whereas Komodo-X doubles this to 6K @80fps and 4K @120fps
  • Komodo captures R3D Redcode internally to 422 HQ, whereas the Komodo-X can capture internally 4444 XQ codecs.
  • Komodo-X now captures to CFExpress type B Media due to data rates of higher frame rate, whereas Komodo 6K uses CFAST 2 media.
  • Komodo has a modular back which takes lightweight Canon batts for lightweight gimbal work, whereas Komodo 6K has a comprehensive set of i/o and a native V-Lock battery clip.  This means that the original Komodo is both smaller and lighter in operation and the new Komodo-X is 10mm taller too.
  • Both are native RF mount, though the Komodo-X has a locking RF mount.  Both can convert to EF or PL mount.
  • Komodo-X has Expanded Shutter control.
  • Both have wireless video capability, though it is in 720p in Komodo, vs 1080p in Komodo-X

In summary, the Komodo is a great entry-level camera and the Komodo-X has some important improvements, which might be useful.  However, if size remains the optical concern, then stick with the original Komodo-X.

Next Generation KOMODO Sensor 

KOMODO-X features the same sized 6K S35 Global Shutter sensor as the KOMODO, but with a ground up redesign and key architecture improvements.

Improved detail and color in shadows, paired with double the frame rates at 6K 80P and 4K 120P makes KOMODO-X an even more powerful tool for creatives.

Enhanced Body and I/O 

With key improvements for professional workflows, the KOMODO-X now shares many features with the DSMC3 line while still maintaining the impressively small KOMODO form factor. An integrated micro V-Lock allows for direct attachment of professional micro V-Lock batteries without the need for adapters and is also compatible with the upcoming RED PRO I/O Module to provide auxiliary power and compatibility with full sized V-Lock and Gold Mount batteries.

A reinforced RF lens mount with locking mechanism maintains the flexibility of toolless switching between multiple lens mount types, while providing the stability and rigidity professionals need. KOMODO-X is also fully compatible with /i PL lenses using the RED RF to PL Adapter.

12G SDI, full sized DC-IN, USB Type-C, and a phantom powered locking audio connector further enables KOMODO-X to seamlessly integrate into any professional workflow. KOMODO-X is compatible with DSMC3™ RED® 5-Pin to Single 3.5mm Adapter[hyperlink] to support existing KOMODO microphones, or the DSMC3™ RED® 5-Pin to Dual XLR Adapter[hyperlink] for general purpose XLR microphones.

An integrated 2.4” LCD allows for simplified control and image preview in compact setups. For more precise monitoring, KOMODO-X supports the DSMC3 7” Touch LCD which provides a daylight viewable, high-resolution, camera top monitor and control solution without the mess of cables.

IP Connected 

KOMODO-X is a powerful platform for any IP based workflow, from Virtual Production to Live Broadcast. With integrated USB Type-C connection and built-in Wi-Fi, remotely control the camera using RED Control or RED Control Pro, as well as IP media offloading using FTP or in-camera Cloud Uploading functionality. In addition, KOMODO-X supports frame-accurate PTP synchronization or tri-level genlock sensor sync with the ability to offset on the fly to support multi-camera LED volume productions.

KOMODO-X also supports RED Connect, a licensed feature that allows for live broadcasting of 6K images directly from the camera over IP, expanding RED’s cinematic imagery into boundless new uses.
